Dr. Ida P. Rolf — Founder of Rolfing® Structural Integration

Who Created Rolfing® Structural Integration?

Dr. Ida P. Rolf was the founder and developer of Rolfing® Structural Integration, a method of bodywork based on her exploration of the relationship between the body's structure, movement, connective tissue, and gravity.

Dr. Rolf earned her Ph.D. in biochemistry from Columbia University in 1920 and later conducted research in organic chemistry at the Rockefeller Institute. Throughout her life, she also explored a variety of approaches to health and human structure, including osteopathy, chiropractic, homeopathy, and yoga.

Through her observations and years of experimentation, Dr. Rolf developed a different way of looking at the human body. Rather than viewing posture and movement as isolated problems in individual muscles or joints, she became interested in how the body's structures relate to one another as a whole—and how those relationships affect the way a person functions within gravity.

The Importance of Fascia

A central part of Dr. Rolf's work was the body's connective-tissue system, commonly referred to as fascia. Fascia forms a continuous network throughout the body, surrounding, supporting, and connecting muscles, bones, organs, joints, and other structures.

Dr. Rolf recognized that changes in the organization and tension of this connective-tissue network could influence posture, movement, and the body's ability to support itself efficiently. Her work therefore focused not simply on manipulating individual muscles, but on changing relationships within the body's larger structural system.

Organizing the Body in Gravity

One of Dr. Rolf's central insights was the importance of gravity to human structure.

The body is constantly adapting to gravity as we stand, sit, walk, work, exercise, and move through everyday life. Injuries, repetitive activities, habits, and other experiences can contribute to compensations that alter how different parts of the body relate to one another.

Dr. Rolf sought to improve these relationships by helping the body become more organized, balanced, and integrated within the field of gravity.

This concept became the foundation of what is now known as Rolfing® Structural Integration. The Dr. Ida Rolf Institute defines Rolfing SI as the theory and practice of organizing the human being in the field of gravity, with the goal of enhancing structural integrity and more economical function.

The Rolfing® Ten-Series

Dr. Rolf developed a systematic series of ten sessions, now known as the Rolfing Ten-Series®, to guide the process of structural integration.

The Ten-Series is not simply ten separate sessions addressing ten different areas of the body. Each session has a particular emphasis while the practitioner continually considers the relationships of the entire body.

The series progresses through different layers and regions of the body, building upon the changes made in previous sessions. The early sessions establish a foundation and address the body's outer or "sleeve" structures. The middle sessions focus more deeply on the body's core and structural support. The final sessions emphasize integration, bringing the changes made throughout the series into greater coordination and balance.

The purpose of this systematic approach is to help the body develop a more integrated relationship between structure, movement, and gravity.

Dr. Rolf's Lasting Influence

Dr. Rolf's work eventually became known as Structural Integration, and the method later became widely known as Rolfing® Structural Integration.

She founded The Rolf Institute of Structural Integration in Boulder, Colorado, in 1971 to teach and preserve the work she had developed. The Institute continues today as the Dr. Ida Rolf Institute®, which trains and certifies Rolfing® Structural Integration practitioners.

Dr. Rolf's work established a distinctive approach to understanding the human body—one that considers the body as an interconnected structural system rather than a collection of separate parts.

Her central question remains at the heart of Rolfing® Structural Integration:

How can the human body become more organized and integrated so that it can function more efficiently within gravity?
